Lying astride the main highway from Dar es Salaam through Morogoro, Iringa and Mbeya to Zambia, Mikumi National Park covers an area of 3,230 sq.km and is the third largest park in Tanzania. It was gazetted in 1964.

It is the most accessible park from Dar es Salaam. The park lies in a horseshoe of towering mountains and forested foothills of Makata River. To the east, rises the 900 feet massif of Uluguru mountin ranges; while to the south-west are the craggy peaks of the Lumango Mountains.

The park is rich in wildlife and animals like buffaloes, lions, wildebeests,

zebras, impalas, warthogs and elephants can easily be seen all the year round. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded, some of which are Eurasian migrants.

Some reptiles such as crocodiles, monitor lizards and pythons are also residents in the park. Mikumi Wildlife Lodge and Mikumi Tented Camp offer good accommodation and food.
